What does TaxAct do well?
Just like any other tax filing service they walk you through every single step on every single item you'd need to go through to completely file your return. They offer different levels depending on the difficulty of your tax return. The offerings range from people with their own business and multiple homes to people filing just for their own.
What does TaxAct not do well?
They are expensive. Compared to any other service they are in the higher end in price. They are shady with the design and lead everyone to the most expensive packages and gouge the market. They don't do a fantastic job explaining or teaching the user. Overall a lackluster operation.
What do you wish you had known about TaxAct before using?
Of all the alternatives that exist 85% beat taxact in price while offering the same service at a dramatic fraction of the cost. If you pay for their premier tier of support you'll have the option to ask their professional accountants on staff to allow you answer personalized to your own situation
Have you used a competitor to TaxAct? If so, how does it compare?
As a shameless promotion, FreeTaxUSA will have my business up until something dramatic changes. They have produced consistently better returns and I pay a grand total of $15. Nothing extra and nothing hidden.
